The Antarctic

In our group of 6 we silently negotiated the building of a ship that initially had a blurred purpose (except boy did it make our arms sore!!!!!)

Then the observers told us what they saw - “ice breaker” “narrow” “determined”" a job to do and we’re going to do it”.

The ice breaker comment stood out and we set about  re framing our ship to become the ultimate ice breaker that we christened “The Antartic”

It was useful for us, the facilitators of this activity, to have the audience provide ideas and input into the work of another group because it allows greater variety to the options for the direction of the activity. We had only 20 minutes for the construction of these boats, and the speed with which the participants responded meant that the ships were built quickly. By allowing each group to respond to what they see the other groups creating, the ships suddenly had more potential and wider opportunities open to them. This meant that when the groups went back to continue building they spent a longer time planning and thinking about what they wanted to create. 20 minutes was now only just enough time.
